PFPS Webinar Series Continues with Discussion of Education Savings Account Vouchers

On June 9 at 4 p.m. EST, Public Funds Public Schools (PFPS) and the National Education Policy Center (NEPC) will host the second in a series of webinars on topics related to private school vouchers and PFPS’s goal of ensuring public funds are used to maintain, support and strengthen public schools.

The webinar, entitled “Education Savings Account Vouchers Explained: What are they, and what are their likely impacts on students and on public schooling?”, will feature Dr. Kevin G. Welner, Professor at the University of Colorado at Boulder School of Education and Director of the National Education Policy Center, and Dr. Luis Huerta, Associate Professor of Education and Public Policy at Teachers College, Columbia University. Dr. Welner and Dr. Huerta have each authored numerous publications on private school vouchers.

This webinar will use a discussion format to explore the past and present of Education Savings Account (ESA) vouchers, including how they evolved from traditional voucher and tuition tax credit programs and their likely impacts on students and public schooling. With U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos proposing private school vouchers in the form of “microgrants” funded with federal COVID-19 stimulus dollars for education, it is more important than ever to understand what ESAs are and why voucher advocates are promoting ESAs during the current crisis.
