PFPS Launches New Webpage on the Federal Voucher Scheme with Resources for Public Education Advocates
The budget reconciliation bill signed in summer 2025 established the first ever national private education voucher scheme. PFPS has been hard at work producing resources for public education supporters to better understand the federal program and work to keep their states from opting in.
We have now collected all of those resources in one place: a new page on the PFPS website with information explaining how the federal voucher program works; how it will inflict harm on students, public schools, and states; and why state leaders should decline to participate.
As part of the Trump administration’s ongoing assault on public education, the new federal voucher scheme will divert federal tax dollars from the U.S. Treasury to provide a 100% tax credit of up to $1,700 annually to individuals who make contributions to “scholarship granting organizations” (SGOs) that pass out vouchers. However, research and data show that private school voucher programs siphon public funds from public schools that welcome all students to private entities that don’t produce better educational outcomes, have little accountability to the public, and often blatantly discriminate against children and families.
Across the country, educators, parents, students, and advocates are fighting to ensure that public funds are used to support and strengthen public schools. To address questions and concerns about the federal voucher program, PFPS has developed resources including webinars, FAQs, and policy briefs, and is including state bills about the federal voucher program in our national voucher bill tracker.
We will continue to update the federal voucher program webpage as more information about the program and its regulations becomes available.
“The Trump administration has already cut vital funding and programs that support the most vulnerable students. The new federal voucher scheme will divert even more resources away from public schools that welcome and serve all students,” said Patrick Cremin, staff attorney at Education Law Center, which directs the PFPS campaign. “Our new webpage provides fact-based resources for public education advocates working to ensure that public funds are used for public schools.”
